New Goals for the End of Summer

There’s something about summer that brings out the free spirit in people. The warm summer sun and the longer periods of daylight are a catalyst for playing and enjoying life. Vacation plans become more important than the other obligations of work or school that usually take center stage the rest of the year. When summer starts to wind down and cooler mornings and shorter evenings prevail, it can start to seem as if something precious has been lost.

It is possible to anticipate the approach of autumn with great expectations for good things to come. Much like the official start of the new year in January when people resolve to change for the better, autumn is a perfect time to make a fresh start and institute new changes and improvements in life.

.   If you were the typical student growing up, autumn signaled the start of a new school year. This meant new friends, new areas of study and new experiences. It was the greatest period of expansion in your young life. It can still be like that. Local community colleges offer a wide range of general education types of courses. You can pursue your latent interest in Chinese cooking, web design or fashion merchandising. Fall is the time to sign up. Expand your career options or just expand your mind, the choice is yours.

.   Maybe you spent the last three months of summer vacationing with little thought to achieving or maintaining that swimsuit-ready body you were so proud of showing off. Now is the time to reclaim your fitness goals. Get back to the gym; plan fall hiking expeditions to enjoy the changing leaves or re-evaluate your diet plan. Autumn is the perfect time to focus on self-improvement.

.   With summer ending, it’s only a hop, skip, and a jump into the holiday season. Start early in planning your entertainment, gift giving and charitable efforts this year. Early planning will make the holiday season easier on your budget and on your nerves. It will give you more time to enjoy the holidays and less time to stress over them.

.   Cooler temperatures and shorter hours of daylight make it tempting to stay indoors more. Use this time to your advantage. Fall is the time to delve into those household projects and do all those chores you’ve been trying to overlook while the fresh air and warm breezes were calling your name all summer long. You’ve run out of excuses to avoid cleaning out the garage or reorganizing your closets.

Every season brings with it the opportunity for growth and expanded opportunity. The next time you take note of the passing summer days and wistfully long for the chance to start the season over again, just remember, the new season will bring its own excitement. Open yourself up to every new opportunity. And, never forget, summer will be back again next year.
