Do you sometimes find yourself staring at your “to do” list but you can’t work up any motivation to get it done? Maybe you’re at work and your boss has given you a deadline but you feel unable to get started on the project?

This is the time when you need to dig deep to discover your motivation. Why do you want to succeed? The truth is that success never happens without motivation. So think about your unique inspiration to move forward. Everyone is different and so are their motivations.

Some of us love to visualize what it will look like to complete the project and reach the goal. For example, if your goal is to make more money or lose 10 pounds, you try to actually “see” yourself achieving those goals. Sometimes, if you can just picture what the end of the road looks like you can motivate yourself to achieve it. If you don’t lose sight of your goals, you will know what you’re working for and you will work harder to get there.

Prepare well and you will feel motivated to work on the project. That’s because if you don’t have all the information or preparation completed ahead of time, you won’t be able to move forward and that will kill your motivation. You can have all the persistence in the world but if you don’t lay the groundwork, you won’t succeed.

Sometimes your environment becomes stale and you need a change. Often, by finding a new place to work such as a coffee shop or a different room in your home, you will be able to renew your motivation and move ahead.

It is also important to surround yourself with people who have a positive attitude. That’s because if you’re around successful people their attitude tends to affect you. You will feel energized by their presence. On the other hand, if you surround yourself with negative people or surroundings, you will take in that energy as well.

If you still can’t find any motivation, it might be that you need to reevaluate the tasks you have planned and make sure they will actually take you to your goal. Look for more information about the subject. Take a walk, read an inspiring book or go work in the garden for a while. When you do this, your brain will still work on the problem and often you will be able to find a better way to reach your goal.

Help someone else. When you help another person, you often find that you are helping yourself. Sometimes you will actually reach your goal by helping someone else reach theirs. You will feel energized and your motivation will soar when people can count on you. You don’t want to disappoint someone else so you will usually work even harder to succeed.

Reading aloud or talking to oneself is another way to find motivation. Read positive affirmations when you need motivation and you will be surprised how much they help get you back on track.

Finally, keep in mind that you can get motivation from many different sources and often you must dig within yourself to find that motivation. Above all, believe in your own abilities. Look for good to happen and it probably will. Don’t be afraid when you have a setback. Just regroup and carry on. This persistence will make you successful.
